Perfect for the Weekend

I have recently become quite obsessed with dance flashmobs.  Totally random, yes?  I just saw this flashmob that supposedly came out o' Belgium, set to one of the most delightful songs that might exist in life.

Shut up, Julie Andrews is awesome!

Check it out... The first half is awesome; the second half is fantastic.

Have you ever been in a flashmob?  How was it (so I can live vicariously through you)?!?!?!  :D

Thanksgiving in October is Always a Good Idea

Always.

I don't know if I've mentioned this on the blog before, but Wrigley T and Senor Diamondback are all in love and hitchified and stuff.  They are also expecting a wee baby boy who has been duly named "Chicken, Jr." after his father, who, according to Wrigley T, looks like a chicken.  Not really, but somehow Senor Diamondback is also known as Chicken.  So his son is Chicken, Jr.  You follow?

Wrigley T is in her second trimester and craving all kinds of crazy things, most recently Thanksgiving food.  Finally, she couldn't take it anymore and announced that Casa Diamondback/Wrigley would be hosting a full-on Thanksgiving in October.

Who could say no to that?  Answer: Not me... Or any of our other friends, for that matter...

We had turkey, stuffing, taters...

...Green Bean Casserole, rolls (we had a flaming rolls in the oven for a little while, which was exciting!), tabouleh...

Wine...

... And more wine!

All that food made us ridiculously sleepy, as every good Thanksgiving meal should.

Our meal was the night before my birthday, so Dirrrty Nurse baked a homemade German Chocolate birthday cake for me!  It was yummo.

Somehow, in our drunkalicious, food coma trance, we christened the event "Googleheimer."  What does that mean?  I do not know, but it made sense at the time.  We decided Googleheimer must become a yearly event, whether or not one of us is knocked up.

The holidays are coming up fast!  Some people love 'em; some people dread them.  Which are you?

Training for a Marathon Ruins Your Life

Hi, friends!  I've missed you.  Maps have been consuming my life, which is good, but it means the blogging takes a back seat.  Never fear, I have a few very fun things to share with you, like how Thanksgiving in October MIGHT be the best idea ever. (It really is!)  That'll come later this week.

So, as many of you know, I have been training for my very first full marathon.  I'll be running shuffling in the White Rock Marathon, which takes place in Dallas.  I'll have plenty of good company.  My sister Tweets is running the full with me.  My boytoy - hereafter affectionately known as Bossyboots - will be running the half marathon; and my mom and sister IV *might* be doing the White Rock 5k.  (They are still deciding.)  The White Rock Marathon is a biggie, with a number of distances.  I am very, very excited.  :)

That being said...  MARATHON TRAINING RUINS YOUR LIFE.  I can never do anything because I always have to be a lame-o and say "Sorry, I can't go; I have to run 10 miles."  And so on and so forth.  I basically bullied my boyfriend into the half marathon because how else are we going to hang out?  You are always tired, and you are always hungry HONGRY.  My friends do fun things like go to Zumba classes and dinner outings.  What am I doing while they are having a great time together?  Freezing my ass off outside and running bookoo miles.  It stinks.  I am basically hanging on til December when I get my life back.

When you are Marathon Training, every weekend you have a "long run."  During the week, you run from three to ten miles, then on Saturdays, you have a super-run that builds in length every week.  Two weeks ago, I had to run thirteen miles.

It was the worst run of my life.

The run took me three hours and fifteen minutes, and my legs felt like cement blocks the whole way.  I was cursing every other minute -  I was miserable.  The run was so awful that I started to be really scared about the marathon.  Can I actually do it?

Well, yesterday, I ran fifteen miles.  It took me three and a half hours, which is still horrible, but I did it, and I didn't hate my life.  This is the longest distance I've ever run, and it was ok.  I bought myself a cold weather running outfit.  Nike had a cold weather running line, and it helped me a lot, actually.  I recommend it!  Expensive, but worth every penny.

Training has also been unexpectedly emotional.  I am NOT an athelete; seriously. When I cross the marathon finish line (and I WILL!) I fully expect to be crying a bit; and my post-race margarita will be extra sweet.  When you step out of your box and try something totally new, you can find a whole side of yourself that you never knew existed.

What new things have you learned about yourself lately?

Emphasis on Maps

Hi, friends!  If you haven't been able to tell, things have been hopping around here in the maps department, hence things are slow in the blog department.  !!!  As I am drawing up a storm right now, the blog'll be back next week with new posts.  I hope you all are well, and I miss you!

XOXO,

Penny

A Motor City Map: Michigan

When Katie contacted me about creating her Dearborn/Detroit Save-the-Date I was excited because the locations she chose were all so diverse - key for a fun and interesting map.  She included locations like the Henry Ford Estate, Comerica Park, the Spirit of Detroit, and the Ambassador Bridge.  Katie and Brendon said they were going for a vintage look, which is always a challenge because you don't want it to be too girly!  (There is a man involved, after all.)  :)  I was inspired by looking at different Victorian Garden postcards, which gave me the idea to create the frame out of stained-glassesque flowers and ornaments.  I also am really pleased with the purple, golden, and green color scheme - I love it!

Check it out...

*Pardon the blurring of last names, but I don't think my clients would want their full names splashed all over the internet!

One of my favorite parts of the map is The Spirit of Detroit statue - he's a saxy man!

I love the Model T car, too...

I put a lot of effort into making the frames of my maps interesting - I think they are important to unifying the map and setting a fun tone!  (because if the map isnn't fun... then what's the point?)  I love the flowers and scrollwork on this one.

Congratulations, Katie and Brendon!
